When is an escalator suitable?
Escalators are suitable when a flight of stairs may well be too steep to be safe but an elevator would simply not be appropriate because of the distance needed to be travelled. Escalators often work in tandem with lifts and provide an alternative. They are suitable for offices, shopping centres or travel interchanges where large numbers of people need to move about quickly and safely- they can also make people feel much more relaxed and un-rushed and, certainly if you’re running a business which is aimed towards customer cared, this is something which you certainly need to consider.
Ultimately, nobody knows your business better than you and thus you know what the needs of your customers or employees are; escalators are clearly a large financial investment to make, especially if you aren’t sure. If your company seems to be running smoothly without an escalator and indeed has been for a number of years, then the chances are that you really don’t need an escalator.
You also need to consider whether or not your building can offer the structural support which an escalator needs and whether or not the building time and short-term inconvenience caused will be worth it in the long run.
