When is a stair lift suitable?

Stair lifts are suitable for those who still have limited mobility in their legs and who have fairly good upper-body strength. They are most certainly not suitable for those people who are permanently in a wheelchair- in this case a disabled lift or platform lift would be a much more suitable option which would make life in the home much easier for these people.

With a stair lift you still need to be able to get into it and step out of it at the end- either into a waiting wheelchair or a zimmer frame. Because they are all about increasing the independence of the people using them, they are normally used by people for whom stairs have become a chore but who can still walk short distances on flat surfaces and who can lift themselves in and out of the chair un-aided. Also, it is suitable as a temporary solution for people who may have mobility difficulties due to an injury or an accident which has left them, only temporarily, unable to climb stairs properly. This sort of situation could well happen to any of us and stair lifts provide a good solution.
