What is a cherry picker?
You may know this popular piece of machinery under one of its other, but by no means as fun, names such as the boom lift, the man lift or the basket crane. We are all used to seeing them in our day to day lives but many people get confused; the name doesn’t apply to the whole vehicle- just to the hydraulic arm and basket which is often attached to the back of a van or truck. It works via a hydraulic lifting system that uses incompressible liquid to extend the arm of the cherry picker which, in turn, lifts up the basket which contains the worker or the goods which need to be elevated. They are often used by workers who have to perform awkward tasks such as fixing street lamps or cleaning windows which are quite a long way off the ground.
They were originally designed for use in orchards; not exclusively cherry orchards although this is where the rather unusual name originates from. The areal work platforms are now used to do a variety of tasks and have really revolutionized the way in which many awkward tasks can now be completed.
