Should I buy a stair-lift?

It is all too easy to be glib about this and say, yes of course, go out and buy one straight away. The current economic situation means that, in reality, this just isn’t an easy decision for many people- they may think about either getting a second hand one or indeed renting a stair lift instead- however buying one does have certain advantages attached to it which you certainly should be aware of before you jump into making any decision. 

Buying a stair lift, whilst quite a big expense, is going to be worth it if, in the long run, the mobility problems of the person using it are going to stay the same or get worse- they are an investment and, if you are going to get a lot of years use out of it, or if a stair lift could dramatically improve the quality of someone’s life, then they are certainly worth the investment. However, if you have a temporary injury which, in time, you expect should improve, buying a stair lift could well turn out to be a false economy- you could be better-off renting one instead in this situation.
