How does a service lift work?

Service lifts may be an integral part of many businesses and industries in the 21st Century, but they work on a system which has remained fundamentally unchanged for many years.  It is essentially a hold/go pressure system with and an operating system is then fitted, either inside the cage if the service lift is a large one, or at the top or bottom of the lift shaft so that it can be sent up and down depending on what is needed and where the products need to be delivered to.

If the service lift is only very small and is only needed to cover a very short distance, then there is also the possibility that it could work on a simple rope system in the same way that the dumb waiters of old would have worked. However, this is highly unlikely, and the fierce regulations of the present day mean that this would likely be considered unsafe for many if not most contemporary working environments.

Ultimately, and this may sound glib, but you don’t really need to understand how your lift works- as long as you keep it properly maintained and understand when something goes wrong you should be perfectly fine.
