Adhering to European accessibility & mobility standards
EN81-70 is a European standard, used as the benchmark which every Passenger/Goods lift manufacturer and lift installation engineer has to abide by. The standard applies to lift construction and installation. It helps manufacturers and lift engineers to meet all requirements of the Lift Regulations 1997 and those of The Disability and Discrimination Act of 1994 (D.D.A.).

The aim of the D.D.A. is to prevent and overcome physical barriers for people in wheelchairs or with mobility problems. The D.D.A. states that all buildings must be accessible to disabled people.

Barred Access
The physical barriers are, for example, steps leading up to the entrance to or exit from a building. It refers to buildings with staircases but no passenger lifts. These features are ones that able-bodied people take for granted but effectively bar access to those with limited mobility, especially wheelchair users.

Walking Aids
Among other things it covers safety issues, accident prevention, health and safety requirements, access and installation. Not only wheelchair users are covered. People with limited mental capacity, deaf and blind users, people with pushchairs and those with walking aids such as walking sticks, Zimmer frames and so on are represented.

To provide accessibility a lift has to:

  • Be instantly recognisable as a lift and in an easy- to-reach location
  • Have suitable lighting inside and in the area outside the lift, including the approach
  • Have enough room outside the lift for a wheelchair to turn around
  • Be large enough to accommodate a wheelchair
  • Have audible announcements for the blind e.g. ‘mind the door’
  • Have simple, readable buttons including buttons in Braille for sight impaired users
  • Have visual signals for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Stop at the precise level as outside floor for a smooth entry to and exit from the lift
